Rose Bay History
Rose Bay, a harbourside suburb in Sydney, Australia, was named after George Rose - a British Treasury Secretary. Steele Point, located at Nielsen Park, was named after Thomas Steele. HMAS Tingira, a naval training ship, trained over 3,000 Australian sailors in Rose Bay. In a moment of great pride, Rose Bay became Sydney's first international airport in 1938, as seaplane flights to and from London started operating from there. On September 14, 1945, nine Catalina flying boats brought home Australian prisoners of war, marking another important moment in the history of Rose Bay.
