Walsh Bay History
Walsh Bay, a historic docks zone situated in the western headland of Sydney Cove, has a rich history. It served as the anchorage for the First Fleet and was the site of the Port Jackson convict settlement's establishment in 1788. Originally, it was a bustling hub of activity for the Gadigal natives. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it evolved into the thriving Darling Harbour cargo port. However, since the early 1980s, Walsh Bay has undergone a remarkable transformation, embracing new cultural, commercial, and residential renewals. The bay, named in 1918, owes its rejuvenation to the visionary planning of Henry Deane Walsh. The then-chairman, Robert Rowan Purdon Hickson, left his mark on the landscape with Hickson Road, the new freight thoroughfare around this headland.
