Homebush Bay History

Homebush Bay is a bay located on the south bank of the Parramatta River in Sydney, Australia. It is a significant area for the local community. The bay has both natural and artificial shorelines on its southern side, which run along the suburbs of Wentworth Point and Rhodes. Homebush Bay is situated approximately 13 kilometres (8.1 miles) west of Sydney's central business district.

Unfortunately, Homebush Bay was contaminated with dioxins and other chemicals by a local chemical plant called Union Carbide in the 1900s. This contamination has led to commercial fishing bans in most of Sydney Harbour, and health advisories have been issued. These advisories recommend specific guidelines for fish consumption from the Parramatta River due to the presence of contaminants such as phthalates, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, DDT, and heavy metals.

From 2008 to 2010, remediation efforts eliminated about 75% of the dioxins from the bay, but the situation remains serious. Fishing is still strictly prohibited in Homebush Bay, and caution is advised for fish consumption from the Parramatta River due to the lingering presence of contaminants. The area west and south of the bay, which was once a suburb of Sydney, is now part of the suburbs of Sydney Olympic Park, Wentworth Point, and Lidcombe, all of which are in the City of Parramatta.
