Balmain History
Balmain is a suburb in Sydney, Australia. It was named after William Balmain, a surgeon who arrived in Sydney in 1795. Governor John Hunter made a portrait of William Balmain in 1800. The suburb was established in 1836, and by 1861, it had been divided into two areas: the eastern part, which was well-populated, and the western part, which was sparsely populated and extended to the gates of Callan Park.
Balmain is home to some of Sydney's oldest pubs and is known for its lovely collection of watering holes and beer gardens. The London Hotel, which dates back to 1870; the Bald Rock, which was built in 1876; the Royal Oak, which was established in 1879; and the Riverview Hotel, which was built in 1880, are all located in Balmain.
